2007 Ernst-Ruska Award Winner: Dr. Hiroshi JINNAI

Dr.JINNAIIn a ceremony held in September at Saarland University, Saarbrucken, Germany, KIT Associate ProfessorJINNAI became the first Japanese ever to win the prestigious biannual Ernst-Ruska Award. This award, named after Ernst Ruska, winner of the 1986 Nobel Prize for his invention of the transmission electron microscope, is given by the DGE or Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Elektronenmikroskopie (German Society of Electron Microscopy).1

Associate Professor Jinnai of the Macromolecular Science and Engineering Department was recognized for his research with Professor Richard J. Spontak of North Carolina State University, USA and Professor Paul A. Midgley of University of Cambridge, United Kingdom. Their joint study entitled "Novel and Quantitative Uses of Electron Tomography in the 3D Study of Nanostructured Materials" made possible the observation of three-dimensional objects less than one nanometer (one billionth of a meter) in size. This is the world’s highest resolution to date.

Dr.JINNAI"Associate Professor Jinnai's current research interests include 3D imaging and analysis of block copolymers and nano-composites using Transmission Electron Microtomography, a process which he has developed using the JEOL TEM. He also uses Laser Scanning Confocal Microscopy and X-ray CT to study the phase separation process of polymer blends."2

Associate Professor Jinnai may be contacted at: Polymer Mechanics Laboratory, Dept. of Macromolecular Science and Engineering, Kyoto Institute of Technology.
