A timer, an alarm clock and a set of bathroom scales all specially constructed for persons with deafblindness (dual-sensory-impairment) were presented to Associate Professor Satoshi Fukushima of the University of Tokyo’s Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology by KIT Vice President Takenaga.

As part of the KIT Foundation Day Commemorative Celebration on May 27th, Associate Professor Fukushima gave a special lecture entitled “Universal Communication: What does it mean that we laugh and cry together?” In his talk, Associate Professor Fukushima mentioned his disappointment that several appliances he relies on to increase his independence, are no longer being produced. Hearing this, President Ejima promised to have these devices produced here at KIT. In October, Vice President Takenaka delivered the new products to an expectant Associate Professor Fukushima.

With this success under our belts, we plan to collaborate with Fukushima’s Lab and private enterprise to tackle the development of an electronic device to simultaneously transcribe speech to braille.
