BioResource Symposium: Kyoto Brand High Quality Genetic Resources

On October 23, a BioResource Symposium entitled, The Development of High Quality Genetic Resources: The Kyoto Brand, was held in commemoration of the first 10 years of the KIT Drosophila Genetic Resource Center. Recognized in 2002 as the core institution of the MEXT bio-resource project, and boasting the greatest number of genetic strains of Drosophila maintained at a single location, this center is Japan’s foremost comprehensive Drosophila genetic library and research facility.

By introducing advanced research focused on the development of high quality, novel and functional genetic resources, the symposium shown a light on the potential future of genetic resources and outlined anticipated trends in research.
MEXT Director of Life Sciences of Research Promotion Bureau, Ishii Yasuhiko and KIT Vice president Takenaga Mutsuo expressed their hopes regarding developments in genetic research, spoke of the importance of providing, developing and maintaining genetic resources, and of actively participating in the vast global biotech conversation.

The symposium featured presentations by nine researchers working on the domestic and international forefront of research on Drosophila, rats and yeasts. Over 80 participants enthusiastically engaged with the speakers. The lively question and answer session indicated the symposium was a successful meeting of minds.
