| Exhibition: Modern Graphic Design in Japan Spotlight on Taisho to Showa
Period Posters (1912 to 1989) |
 |
On the occasion of receiving newly acquisitioned graphic design work, we are pleased to open the current exhibition, Modern Graphic Design in Japan, Spotlight on Taisho to Showa Period (1912 to 1989) Posters, which features representative posters of modern Japan. Over 2,000 works from the Taisho and Showa periods were added to our collection last year. An additional 2,000 are scheduled to be added to the collection this year. Over the more than 100 years since the opening of our predecessor institution, the Kyoto College of Technology in 1902, we have continued to collect work for use as a design education resource. This year’s new additions make our collection preeminent in Japan.
By displaying these new additions in combination with the former collection, a comprehensive picture of poster designs of modern Japan and the evolution of printing technology comes into view. We currently exhibit not only posters but labels, handbills and other evidence of the atmosphere of this era and of changes that took place in printing technology.
We find evidence of the origins of Japan’s modern graphic design in the
many posters and illustrations on display in this exhibition: Japan’s first
nude poster for Akadama Port Wine, beverage posters and illustrations that
are an extension of the Ukiyoe “beauty” genre, a wide variety of nostalgic
brand logos and icons that reflect the wartime lifestyle, images that inspire
a desire to travel and unique developments in Japanese typography. We hope
you will enjoy immersing yourself in the quintessential designs of the
Meiji to early Showa period (aprox. 1900 to 1940) and in this time when
the poster was the primary advertising medium. |
