The KIT Venture Laboratory has developed a garbage reduction action plan, transforming PET that would otherwise be discarded, into useful items. PET Bottle Recycling Project, or R-PET as it is more commonly known, combines technology and ideas from the KIT community and has already manifested a number of enterprising designs.
This year our first PET recycling machine, located between the vending machines to the south of KIT House, was unveiled and went into service with the fanfare of a recycling promotion event. One of several Venture Laboratory programs this year, the PET recycling promotion event and its prizes were a hit with students. KIT SHOP contributed to the prize selection by donating 100 yen coupons used to top up pre-paid student cards by 100 yen. Students, who had accumulated huge bags of empty PET bottles in their laboratories, came to feed them into the recycling machine. They were pleased and surprised to find winning tickets among the receipts dispensed by the machine.
Another Venture Laboratory project success is the transformation of PET
bottles used on campus into food trays. So far this year, 2000 bottles
have been transformed into 100 cafeteria trays. Click here to access the Venture Lab web site (Japanese only).
Keep the machine in mind when you are ready to recycle a PET bottle and watch for winning tickets Do what you can to refuse, reuse and recycle.
