The second exhibition in the Museum and Archives commemoration of its 30th year of operation, The World of Dyeing, has begun. Seven thousand artifacts related to textile dyeing are housed in our archive. The majority of these were collected as research materials, and as samples and educational materials, by professors from the time our predecessor institution, Kyoto College of Technology, was established in 1902 until the early (1926-47) Showa period.
The current exhibition, The World of Textile Dyeing, makes yuzen-dyed
fabric replicas, roller printed fabric and modern dyeing techniques available
for study. In addition to an understanding of these techniques, an understanding
of traditional dyeing techniques is indispensable. By exhibiting tools
and paper patterns in conjunction with the clothing and fabrics that demonstrate
traditional dyeing techniques, we provide visitors with an opportunity
to become more familiar with this area.
We provide an overview of the transitions seen in dyeing from the Edo Period (1603-1868) to modern times.
As regards modern techniques, we have gained much knowledge through research
of fabric samples. One invaluable resource has been a recent acquisition
now displayed in this exhibition, the Horikawa Research Laboratory Directory
of Sample Dyeing Technique, Laboratory Records, Volume 2.”
This exhibition is a continuation of the 2008 exhibition, Examining Fabrics. We are pleased to be able to include the reports and findings of non-KIT experts from the Dyeing and Weaving Related Materials Research Committee. |
