|
Saturday, November 27 students in the _MEXT Program to Foster Human Resources sub-program, Preservation and Revitalization of Applied Art and Cultural Heritage of the City of Art and Culture; Kyoto participated in a special event held at Ninigi, the KIT Machiya campus in Nakagyo-ku, in conjunction with the official visit of Ms. Irina Bokova, the Director-General of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
In the social gathering following the lecture, a KIT student from Peru prepared ceremonial green tea and served it with tea sweets called Momiji Gari (Collecting Autumn Maple Leaves), in the shapes and colors of autumn leaves. This was followed by a presentation by Professor Mieko Sawada on Preservation and Practical Use of Cultural Heritage Sites in the City of Art and Culture; Kyoto.
Following this, the Director-General Bokova lectured those assembled on
the UNESCO programs for the preservation of tangible and intangible cultural
heritage. She began by quoting the preface of the UNESCO charter which
states: "That since wars begin in the minds of men, it is in the minds
of men that the defenses of peace must be constructed.” She went on to
emphasize the importance of culture.
Director-General Bokova shared her wishes for tangible and intangible cultural heritage to be both preserved and actually used while expressing how this would contribute to the diversity of culture, something of great significance to global society. She praised this Kyoto movement as being exactly what UNESCO is all about.
An active discussion with the 50 persons who attended this event, filled
the cozy rooms of this traditional venue for the remainder of an all too
brief 90 minutes. |
