Fibres are everywhere. Plants and trees are made from fibres. Human and animal bodies are made from and often covered with fibres. Fibrous structures support and protect plants and insects in the wild, often under extreme weather conditions. We know some fibres well, and we are also discovering the unique properties of other fibres such as wild silk. This talk gives an overview of the exciting world of fibre materials, with a focus on fibres from nature. Using examples from nature, I hope to reveal the mysteries and wonders of a range of fibre materials, which may inspire the development of new materials and structures in an energy and resource efficient way.
