Students who are unable to obtain a room at the International House will be required to rent a private apartment. Generally, private accommodations are unfurnished. When you rent a private apartment in Japan, it is customary to pay the landlord key money (reikin) in addition to a security deposit (shikikin) in addition to the first month’s rent. It is recommended that you visit the estate agent with a Japanese friend, or someone who is experienced in such matters, when you search for an apartment.
