Student Report: JoinTECH-Visit at University of Orleans from KIT

Student Report:
Through the JoinTECH-Visit Program, I participated in the Robot Challenge Project, a regular course in which I worked as part of a team with local students to design and build a robot for competition. I also had the opportunity to visit the GREMI Laboratory at Polytech Orléans. Coincidentally, I had been reading Professor Rémi Dussart’s research papers while preparing for my internship, making this visit a major highlight. Professor Dussart kindly gave me an exclusive tour, including access to their normally restricted cleanroom facilities.

This visit gave me valuable insights into the differences between French and Japanese research cultures. While the Japanese system typically focuses on individual research themes starting in the fourth year of undergraduate studies, GREMI emphasizes collaborative projects with industrial partners to optimize manufacturing processes. The seamless cooperation between researchers and interns gave me a new perspective on research and development in an organizational setting.

I was also impressed by the wide range of plasma applications being explored, ranging from agricultural uses and ‘liquid plasma’ to experimental cancer treatments. As I prepare to transition into a work role including the knowledge in plasma etching and deposition, seeing these technologies firsthand was invaluable. Experiencing how academic research is scaled for industrial high-tech environments broadened my perspective and provided a clear, strategic direction for my upcoming career.

Message to future participants of the JoinTECH program
If you decide to join this program, I encourage you to bring as much an open and curious mind as possible.
Stepping into a plasma research environment—completely different from my own research field—greatly broadened my perspective as a researcher and future engineer. I encountered approaches and values that were quite different from those in Japan. By embracing these differences with an open mind, you may discover new technologies and build meaningful connections with fellow engineers from around the world.
The experiences you gain through this program will become valuable assets that for your future career. So, embrace the excitement, stay curious, and make the most of every opportunity this program has to offer!
