Experience the “Fusion” of Science and Art (The Mutual Encounters of Science and Art I)

As part of the educational program designed to achieve Kyoto Institute of Technology’s goal of the “The Mutual Encounters of Science and Art,” students who take the 2nd year subject, The Mutual Encounters of Science and Art I, will experience the “fusion” of science and art through a combination of lectures and practical training.
For example, in a past module, “Build and Take Photographs with a Pinhole Camera,” students listened to lectures about topics related to cameras and photography from scientific, chemical, and historical perspectives, such as vision, the structure of cameras, principles of film, and the history of photography. They then learned the principles of pinhole cameras, before actually building one for themselves. Finally, they used their cameras to take photographs, which were put on display. In other words, they acquired scientific knowledge of the structure and principles of cameras, by building the pinhole camera, as well as using the device they created for artistic expression, to take photographs. Other modules in the program include art created with biotechnology, such as “Bio Art Created with E. coli Ink,” and “Mobile with Motifs from Nature.”

Acquiring a New Engineering Sensibility (The Mutual Encounters of Science and Art II)

Students who have felt the potential for a new engineering sensibility in Mutual Encounters of Science and Art I can go on to take The Mutual Encounters of Science and Art II in 3rd Year. Through discussions with KIT and non-KIT lecturers who are active in fields leading this fusion of science and art, students will aim to acquire that kind of new engineering sensibility.
Students commence their specialist studies in their respective courses in 3rd Year, so at the same time they are pursuing those studies, they can add a new artistic or humanities sensibility, which will lend certainty to the direction of their research.

Bringing the Mutual Encounters of Science and Art to Fruition through Research Applications (The Mutual Encounters of Science and Art III)

The 4th Year subject, Mutual Encounters of Science and Art III, is offered only to students who have been recognized, in Mutual Encounters of Science and Art II, as having the potential to conduct engineering research using their newly-acquired sensibility. As part of their graduation research, they will be asked to give a presentation to a team of KIT and non-KIT experts consisting not only of people in the student’s field, but also of persons from the arts and the humanities. They will then discuss their research with this team, and bring the “mutual encounters of science and art” to fruition as research applications and outcomes.
